Week 3 Day 2

OK, so Week 1 was a bust. I didn’t read A Dance With Dragons. In fact, I had to return it to the library about halfway though the week.

Week 2 was a success!! Matt Richtel’s book Devil’s Plaything was gobbled up in a day. Yep, a day. It’s not a super long book, but boy, does it read well. Richtel is a master of suspense without writing like a pretentious ass. And the best part is there’s a sequel coming out from HarperCollins sometime this year. I haven’t looked into it too deeply yet, but that sequel will be on my list for consumption when it comes out.

Week 3 has barely started, but the good news is that I have A Dance With Dragons back from the library AND I have Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, a science-fiction book by one of the greats, Philip K. Dick. I must admit that I’ve never read a Philip K. Dick book before. He won me over on the first page, though. Want to know how. One word.

Friendlily.

That’s right, folks. He used the older adverbial form of the word “friendly.” Didn’t even know there was a such a thing, did you? Everyone uses “friendly” as the adverb too, but “friendlily” is the older (and more correct, if you’re a stodgy old codger) form.

Why yes, I am a nerd.

Week 1 Day 2

Yesterday was Day One of my big Book a Week project. How much reading did I do? None. And that’s OK.

It’s a big book. Encroaching on the thousand-page mark. So pretty big. And you know what? It might take me more than a week to read it (though I really should finish it in a couple days because the library wants it back…), and that’s OK. Because I’ll just read a small book to make up the rest of the week and shazam! I’ve still read two books in two weeks.

It’s going to work.

The beginning

Welcome to the beginning of my little project.

I call this the “Book a Week-ish Project.” The -ish is there because I’m fully certain that sometimes it will take me longer than a week to read a book. And that’s OK. The purpose of this project is to read, even if it takes me a while.

My project will begin this Monday, 9 January as I march my way through A Dance With Dragons by the inimitable George R. R. Martin. (I’ve already started, so it’s kind of cheating, but that book is big.)

Happy 2012!
